DANGER DOOM at AdultSwim.com

OK, this is probably one of the strangest places to find some mainstream music but there you have it; Adult Swim has never ebbed and flowed with the tide! As you probably know Danger Doom took the hip-hop world by storm late last year but what most don’t know is their connection to Adult Swim (and to my current favorite single “Crazy” by Gnarls Barkley). You can read about DD at their wikipedia page.

But I digress, [adult swim] has FREE MP3s of 2 Danger Doom songs plus tons of other MP3 files from some of their more popular shows, like “Sealab 2021″ (R.I.P.), “Harvey Birdman Attorney at Law” (dig the jazzy, Vic Fontaine vibe, man!) and my personal favorite, “The Venture Bros.”.

6.07.06 UPDATE:

Huge news! [adult swim] is hosting a new 6-track Danger Doom EP, “OCCULT HYMN”, available for FREE download for an unspecified limited time. Props to the always excellent Free Albums Galore blog for beating me to it. Even better is the fact that album artwork and ID tags are included correctly. Love that!

Update from Molly

As you can see, gone is the MP3 player that I hadn’t refreshed since December. Because it’s Flash-based, I had no way to tell how many people where actually using it, besides me of course (I found it handy for listening to the entire playlist when I was on freelance assignments). Plus, it was a big ol’ pain in the ass to have to update it each time I made a post. Right now, I’m looking for a solution that allows me to play the version I’m hosting or linking to without having to make a a second, reduced-quality MP3 for streaming purposes and then upload a new playlist just for the player. I found one on joomla.com but apparently it would only work as a module to the joomla system and not as a free-standing, add-it-to-your-own-blog type thing. So, if anybody has a suggestion…

I’ve added a direct click-thru link to iTunes FREE Single of the Week. I figured, why not have one place where the most consistent FREE stuff is available to you? Even if I don’t happen to like this week’s single or genre, maybe others will. And of course, since it’s FREE, I’m not making any money off you so you’re safe to click thru here like everywhere else.

GATE KEYZ » Stai Tranquillo

Here’s something you probably won’t find elsewhere – Italian hip-hop. After I happened upon their site, I contacted them about the instrumental song that’s used as background music. Mauro (a.k.a. Deal The Dihlyo) nicely wrote back and included the vocal version of the track Stai Tranquillo (Stay Cool) for me to post. I’m generally not a huge fan of the genre but I really dig their sound and it seems, well, not as angry as American hip-hop (not that I know what they’re saying, mind you). Click the link to hear for yourself.

There are four other songs for you to download for FREE from their site (under the downloads section). You can also learn a bit more about the Gate Keyz team via their blog which happily posts in Italian and English here. As Mauro told me, “I hope you appreciate the flava.”

¡Ciao, bello!

MORCHEEBA » Everybody Loves A Loser (remix)

I thought this post was appropriate for tax day, especially, if like me, you’re going to owe the government a chunk of change, why not get something FREE in return? It also seemed easier to quote the email I received than to come up with something new to say:

Been aching for some more medicinal Morcheeba? World’s Fair has been working with the Godfrey Bros. to shell out a series of remixes of the recent “ANTIDOTE” (which is still saving souls across the world). The first experiment, courtesy of New York’s up & coming producer Cassettes Won’t Listen, is now available for download through the World’s Fair site, and will soon be available via Morcheeba’s myspace page.

You already know how much I loves me some Morcheeba, so go grab it here for FREE or take a listen below!

The “Not Necessarily Free” Stuff I’m Listening To Lately

I’m trying to make up for the lack of posts with lots of material. So here goes…
[You may have to click links twice to be taken to the song at the iTunes Music Store –where applicable– even if you already have iTunes open.]

“Desire (Christoph Kardek’s Deep Vocal mix)” by Hanna Hais : Just gorgeous deep French house. Sounds like something off the Naked music label.

“Sean (Eric’s 2WFU Dub)” by Aya : More deep house loveliness.

“Jacob’s Groove (Fresh+Low mix)” by Infectious Audio : Another winner from the Nordic Trax label. There’s something in the water up there! They keep churning out one hit after another.

“I’ll Call You (Kaghoul mix)” by Soul Mekanik : Just smooth, lush and beautiful. Let it take you to another place. Find it at Beatport.com. (Sorry no direct linking available!)

“Breathe (2am)” by Anna Nalick : Not new… but you’ve heard it almost everywhere forlorn lovers need to run in the rain to tell their beloved something of extreme importance.

“Loitering” by Harold Budd & Robin Gutherie [Music from the film Mysterious Skin] : Just one select off this entirely haunting score. It seemed strange and also so familiar when I watched the film. That’s because it features a prominent member of Cocteau Twins. I feel like it could be the perfect musical companion piece (sequel?) to Gustavo Santaolalla’s Brokeback Mountain score.

“Can’t Take It In” by Imogen Heap : Didn’t see Narnia so I had no idea Immi was featuring during the end credits until she sang it in concert. The opening chorus almost struck me dead. She can do no wrong apparently.

“You’re A User” by Beverly and Larry : God, so damn good! And FREE to boot! I’m find myself just saying, “You’re a user” at random times during the day. I think it puts my co-workers on edge. [found via the excellent Knobtweakers]

“Ele” by Dumb Dan : Even more tastiness from the BEVLAR netlabel. Remember “Swamp Thing” by Grid? This reminds me of a more accessible version of that groovy track. If you haven’t picked up on it yet, it’s FREE. [also found via Knobtweakers]

“Enough” by Alif Tree : Gorgeous.

“The Incident” by Urbs : Perfect for a heist… or cocktails.

“Tiptow Dub” by Daniel Lindeberg : One more FREE track from the stellar BEVLAR netlabel.

“Eastern Soul (Tony Future Vision Remix)” by Norken : I love the off-kilterness of it all.

My Room Is White (Flying Lotus remix) by Mia Doi Todd : Unusual eastern-flavored beats but strangely rhythmic and soothing. [Apologies. The link takes you to another remix. Sometimes Apple doesn’t list remixes names so it’s impossible to tell which mix you’re linking to!]

“Keep It Down” by Ben Crea : Just one track off his great EMPLOYEE OF THE MONTH internet album. This one slyly works in a sample of “Voices Carry” from Til Tuesday. Another track, “Time Goes By” features a sample of “Hung Up” by Madonna. I dig the cover art, too! Available for FREE at the Internet Archive. [via Knobtweakers]

“Feel the Beat (Satie)” by Najwa : Older goodness from this Swede. Her new song “So Often” is slow to build but oh so good. Keep an eye out for it as it’s not available at the iTMS yet.

MIKKEL METAL » “CASSINI PIECES”

I haven’t been this excited about a FREE net-release since discovering Cuebism and Emorej. This young and talented great Dane graciously offers up a mini LP with original and reworks of his minimal ambient/techno pieces. The original version of “Pheno” and the Theodor Zox remix of “Abank” steal the show. There are also additional FREE MP3s available from his personal site in the downloads section.

Go here to the Thinner netlabel to grab CASSINI PIECES.
