PRIMAL SCREAM, CHEMICAL BROTHERS, PRODIGY : Remixed!

Been meaning to post these for awhile now; they’re a bit old at this point but maybe new to you! Full remix albums posted with the artists’ approval.

Primal Scream – Screamixadelica : The “Inner Flight” remix by MollyO’ favorite FakeID is the standout track here.

Chemical Brothers – Flip The Switch Remixed : The “Across The Universe”-cover (called “Surface To Air“) remix kept me bouncing for months. It has a great Smashing Pumpkins-sounding guitar.

The Prodigy – Always Outsiders, Never Outdone Remixed : Pop Razor’s redo of “Phoenus” is a terrific update of “Venus”. I think it successfully manages to marry the 60s sound with hip-hop and breakbeats.

Linkage

I finally got my LINKS section in shape. Take a gander at the side-bar, if you know what’s good for you!

Now I know some of you will be scratching your heads, asking “Why is the eMUSIC SERVICES & STORES links list so comprehensive when this is supposed to be a site about getting free music?” Well, silly, lots of those stores/services do offer special promos or regularly feature free tracks. Plus, it wouldn’t kill you to purchase other tracks by those artists you would like to support!

For instance, the iTunes Music Store has a free track available to download every week on the front page of the service (with new ones up each Tuesday). It’s a good way to explore different genres without risk. Even if you think you won’t like it, give it a listen anyway! The joy is in the discovery, remember?

Mercedes-Benz Mixed Tape 08

Never out-classed, the house of Benz continues their fine compilation series with tracks from all over the map. Download the entire album (including CD tray artwork) for FREE here: MERCEDES-BENZ MIXED TAPE

I haven’t gotten around to listening to all fifteen tracks in their entirety yet but rest assured that funk, trip hop, soul and jazz genres are all represented. Female vocalist Luis’ “All Gone” is an immediate standout and has neo-soul hit written all over it… Jill Scott and Angie Stone better watch out, that’s all I’m sayin’!

MIXED TAPE 08 will be up and available for download until October 4th when MIXED TAPE 09 will replace it.

VNV NATION >> Cold (Rated ‘R’ mix by Mig-29)

A FREE electro-punk remix is available for download here; Scroll down to the bottom in the Art+Media section to find it.

The band has issued this warning: “This mix contains heavily censored material of an adult nature and should be listened to by mature adults at high volume.”

PopMatters.com

Lots of FREE MP3s and videos here at PopMatters Music Downloads.

Molly O’ picks: Bob Gould’s “Body of Song” : I’m a big fan of another track off Bob’s new album – also entitled BODY OF SONG – that I was clued into by Fluxblog way back in May, “(Shine Your) Light Love Hope“. It has a catchy pop/rock sensibility plus interesting vocoder effects you don’t often find in male-fronted outings. “Body of Song” is more straightforward rock sound and Bob’s voice is also pleasing without any additional effects.

Be sure to check out Japanese trio PINE*am, too. I’ve been digging their scene since being turned on to “Gymnopedie 0.1” earlier this month over at Between Thought and Expression blog.

subatomicglue >> “AEONBLUE” and “GLOBALENEMY”

Two full free albums by Chicago’s blippy electronic meisters, subatomicglue, are available for download at their website.

Molly’s best of the bunch picks: “aeonblue” and “rise of sol” off AEONBLUE; “the fall of sol” and “pixelguru” off GLOBALENEMY.

NOTE: Albums are posted in .FLAC format and are large downloads! You will need a special player or converter to get them to a more user-friendly format if you want to listen through iTunes or on your iPod. For macintosh, i recommend the free player Cog or Steve Dekorte’s $10 SoundConverter app to convert FLAC files to MP3.

MP3 Player

For your listening pleasure, I’ve installed an in-line MP3 player so you can listen to my recommended free tracks before you download them. Enjoy! (Give it a minute to load the selection before you claim it’s not working, okay?)

Hey, if any of you are Flash geniuses and can help poor Molly out with making the player fit within the margins, I certainly would appreciate the help. I never claimed to be a web guru!

KOUSHIK >> Be With

Stones Throw Records offers up this quiet, delicate track from Koushik.

He’s not quite clubby, not quite loungey; his label describes him as “a unique blend of psychedelia and hip hop”. Listen and decide for yourself.

Direct link to the “Be With” MP3 is here.

THE PLANTAINS >> I Feel Love

A Molly O’ Exclusive! Download this gorgeous acoustic rendition of Gorgio Moroder’s 1970s disco era classic.

Originally made famous by Ms. Hot Stuff herself, Donna Summer, this version strips down the 70s disco-electro sound leaving only the bare words to inflict damage where normally the relentless, driving bass would. Indeed, I’m feeling it! click here to download the MP3.

Be sure to check out the The Plantains official site for more about this unique group, including their “governmental caste system and their six-year plan to revolutionise home computing and electronic audio design.” Also available are 7 MP3s for download… FREE, of course. Best of the bunch: “Nu Wave Girl (Shingo’s Sound of Radical mix)“; their kitschy-retro sound on this one reminds me of the Scissor Sisters.

Many thanks to The Plantains’ Nick Hallett for being so damn cool and responsive.

BT >> Beta (3am Mix)

A great unreleased track from the master of electronica. One of my favorite composers/artist/remixers, BT (aka Brian Transeau) has a 12+ minute, unreleased MP3 posted under the Media section of his site for you to download.

Exactly as the name implies, “Beta (3am mix)” is a late night energetic house track, just slippery enough to get you moving but never break into a full sweat. Don’t wait until you’re completely spent to listen to this one!

Jaguar CD Box Set

Sign up to test drive a Jaguar and get a beautiful 4 CD set compiled by Jason Bentley (of KCRW). Jaguar2005.com

Not only is the packaging gorgeous but so is the music. Volume 2.3 is the best of the four.

For the record: I asked someone who was already interested in purchasing a new car, so I had him sign up. He was never contacted by a Jaguar sales rep and less than three weeks later, the CD set appeared in his mail box. I can’t vouch for your experience, but the CDs more than offset any inconvenience… especially since, in both our cases, there was none!
